For years they have been the butt of jokes and regular figures of fun for comedians across the world. But in India, mothers-in-law are fighting back for a different reason. A new campaign group, the All India Mother-in-Law Protection Forum, has been set up not only to fight negative stereotyping but also push for greater legal protection of their rights.
“What’s happening in India is that mothers-in-law are getting persecuted at the hands of daughters-in-law. This is very rampant everywhere. But it’s not come out in the open,” said founder member Neena Dhulia.
“It’s always happening within the four walls of the house, so the mother-in-law is reluctant to tell anyone because society doesn’t accept her… There’s no one to listen to her. They are suffering in silence,” she told AFP.
The group’s chapter in the southern city of Bangalore has some 50 members and since it launched earlier this month has attracted interest from women in Mumbai and New Delhi who want to set up branches, she added.

Mumbai: Ninety-two-year-old Laxmibai Paleja is scarred physically and mentally. The bruises on her face are a stark reminder of the violence that she has been allegedly subjected to by her daughter-in-law Darshana and grandson Vinay. Laxmibai says she has been constantly harassed by the two since her son died of a paralytic attack in December last year.
“My daughter-in-law hit me on my chest and my grandson kicked my face,” an inconsolable Laxmibai said, who lives Darshana and Vinay in Mulund, a Mumbai suburb.
After the battering, she was allegedly dumped at her daughter’s house who then rushed her to a nearby hospital.

Sub: The unfortunate situation of today’s mothers-in-law
Today we are celebrating the Birthday of Mahatma Gandhi in the whole nation. Gandhiji has quoted that. “Our nation will truly be independent when the women our country is free”. But are the women really free? It is paradoxical because in the present day, the “Mothers-in-Law” are “most unfortunate” lot of women especially those who have a daughter-in-law.
Today’s mother-in-law had been dominated by their orthodox mothers-in-law but they’d suffered silently because she was a responsible and caring woman. But now the same mother-in-law suffers the ordeals of a “Daughter-in-Law” who is an “Empowered Woman” because she has the support of 15 laws protecting her, the society, and the whole Government system at her disposal. But the mother-in-law has not a single law for her protection from such daughters-in-law. Even the National Commission for Women (NCW) discriminates in the spirit with which they acknowledge a mother-in-law’s and a daughter-in-law’s complaint. Mothers-in-law are often ignored or at best counseled when they approach the NCW with their grievances but no action is taken against the errant daughter-in-law.

New Delhi: The tables seem to be turning with the hands of the clock. Or so some would have us believe. As a bunch of beleaguered mothers-in-law — those feisty creatures who are supposed to strike the fear of God into nervous, newly-wed lassies — join hands to launch India’s (and the world’s) first All India Mothers-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF) in Bangalore, one can’t help but wonder if Lalita Pawar would have survived the 21st century.
Well, the idea behind this coming together of misunderstood Mummyjis is the belief that they have been given a rotten deal by society, popular culture and, worse, by a legal system that turns a blind eye to their plight, ever-ready to believe the real villain of the domestic peace: the ‘downtrodden’ daughter-in-law. I am the one who takes bath the last at home and that is the time when the power switches off; hence I am forced to take bath with cold water. My daughter-in-law purportedly does not keep warm water for me to take bath. I cannot tolerate high sound and it causes trouble to me. Even knowing this, my daughter-in-law keeps the volume of the TV high and hides the remote.
The kids have to go to school in the morning. So after taking out their breakfast, she deliberately adds more salt and chili powder to the food when I will be going to eat it. My son does not understand me because for him the food was anyways good, and instead of believing me, chides me for being complaining.
Knowing I am a diabetic patient, she gives me tea with sugar in front of guests. She alleges me that it is due to my upbringing, her husband i.e. my son is not enthusiastic about making a career or earning more money. Do not play with my kids and do not kiss them as your mouth stinks is what she tells me when I play with my grandchildren. Do not give glasses used by you to my children.
