We are Victims; not Vamps.
Mumbai: Ninety-two-year-old Laxmibai Paleja is scarred physically and mentally. The bruises on her face are a stark reminder of the violence that she has been allegedly subjected to by her daughter-in-law Darshana and grandson Vinay. Laxmibai says she has been constantly harassed by the two since her son died of a paralytic attack in December last year.
“My daughter-in-law hit me on my chest and my grandson kicked my face,” an inconsolable Laxmibai said, who lives Darshana and Vinay in Mulund, a Mumbai suburb.
After the battering, she was allegedly dumped at her daughter’s house who then rushed her to a nearby hospital.

BANGALORE — For years they have been the butt of jokes and regular figures of fun for comedians across the world. But in India, mothers-in-law are fighting back for a different reason.
A new campaign group, the All India Mother-in-Law Protection Forum, has been set up not only to fight negative stereotyping but also push for greater legal protection of their rights.
“What’s happening in India is that mothers-in-law are getting persecuted at the hands of daughters-in-law. This is very rampant everywhere. But it’s not come out in the open,” said founder member Neena Dhulia.
“It’s always happening within the four walls of the house, so the mother-in-law is reluctant to tell anyone because society doesn’t accept her… There’s no one to listen to her. They are suffering in silence,” she told AFP.

Bangalore ladies are coming together to break social stereotypes and be heard, reports Vicky Nanjappa.
What’s the punishment for bigamy?
Two mothers-in-law.
Now that’s a joke Neena Dhulia from Bangalore would not be pleased with! You guessed it — she is a mother-in-law. But Neena is also the co-ordinator of the 500-strong All India Mother-in Law Protection Forum (AIMPF).
The Forum was born on September 6 with a loud and clear message: We are not what we have been made out to be in saas-bahu serials.
“Enough is enough,” she says adding, “It is time we too ensured that our voices are heard.”
Neena points out that even though there is a National Commission for Women, it is unfortunate that they don’t listen to the grievances of a mother-in-law with the same enthusiasm that they listen to the complaint of a daughter-in-law. “Why this discrimination?” she asks.

Bengaluru: It is a role reversal of sorts, but the victims here say the harassment they face is all too real. Mothers-inlaw in the city who say they have been harassed and hounded by their daughtersin-law have come together to fight the injustice that is being inflicted on them.
Members of the Akhila Bharatha Atteyara Sangha, or forum for mothers-inlaw, who held their first meeting in Bengaluru on Sunday, say laws that have been promulgated to protect women are now being used against them. The Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, they feel, is being misused by many women to harass their husbands and families.

A group of Indian mothers-in-law have come together to fight the harassment they claim to endure at the hands of their daughters-in-law.
Fifty women have joined the All India Mothers-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF), launched in Bangalore city.
A spokeswoman told the BBC that while there were 15 laws to protect the younger generation, there was nothing to protect mothers-in-law from abuse.
India’s National Commission for Women has acknowledged the problem.
It says that cases against in-laws are often registered by brides who are protected by strict anti-dowry laws.
But a number of the accusations turn out to be false. (more…)

PRESS RELEASE
Sub: Launch of All India Mother-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF)
All India Mother-in-Law Protection Forum (AIMPF) is the first ever social forum created to protect the rights and interests of the mother-in-law. It is a non-funded non-profit organization which will create awareness about the problems faced by mothers-in-law and also fight against the de-facto villainous projection in the socio-legal arena. It can be reached at http://www.aimpf.org .
The mothers-in-law could not bear the harassment any further and said, “Enough is enough” and got together to campaign against:
- The stereotyping of mothers-in-law as evil and blood thirsty by media and popular culture. This violates the civil liberties and the constitutional provisions of right to liberty and right to life.
- It has been scientifically and also statistically established fact that mothers-in-law are unnecessarily maligned and subjected to judgmental attitudes by society.
- National Family Health Survey (NFHS) (http://www.nfhsindia.org Vol-1 Page 500) has conclusively established that a woman in the age group of 15-49 years of age faces 8 times more violence from her own mother compared to mother-in-law. 13.7% women have faced violence from their own mother as compared to 1.7% women who have faced from their mothers-in-law.
- Recent Research has shown that “daughters-in-law are programmed to hate mothers-in-law”. This is one of the most important causes of the stereotyping of mothers-in-law in society.
