08 Mar 10 Mom’s-In-Law Have Their Day

Written by Odeal D’Souza.

Bangalore:

Odd voices of resentment struck a discordant note during the euphoric eve of International Women’s Day celebrations here on Sunday. Aggrieved mothers-in-law and husbands staged a candlelight vigil in protest against the violence allegedly perpetrated by daughters-in-law.

The protestors, belonging to the All India Mother-In-Law Protection Forum, Save Indian Family Foundation and Family Harmony Society, shouted slogans during the protest that lasted for an hour and a half in front of the Gandhi statue on MG Road.

11 Nov 09 A twist to the saas-bahu saga

They are looked upon with suspicion, Hindi soaps portray them as scheming, and when you get married, you are advised to fulfill her needs before yours. But in the modern times, tables seem to have turned. It’s the age of the daughter-in-law, rue mothers-in-law, who have come together to form Akhila Karnataka Atheya Rakshana Vedike (Karnataka Mother-in-law Protection Forum), supporting Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF). Over 100 mothers-in-law are a part of this association. “We have come together to fight against our daughters-in-law who have slapped false complaints against families by misusing Sec 498 (a) of the Indian Penal Code,” said Rajeshwari C, President of the Forum.

11 Nov 09 Debate on misuse of family law

Bengaluru, Nov. 10: Akhila Karnataka Aththeyara Rakshana Vedike (Mothers-in-laws Association) in association with the Save Indian Family Foundation and the Child Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting will observe the National Family Harmony Day by holding a debate on the misuse of IPC section 498a (cruelty against women by spouses and other family members) in Bengaluru on Thursday. As per the National Crime Record Bureau, 1,23,000 women have been arrested between 2004 and 2007 under section 498a.

However, a report from the Centre for Social Research has revealed that only 2 per cent of such dowry harassment cases receive conviction, implying that the remaining has been victims of legal misuse as well, said Janaki Srinivasan, member of the Akhila Karnataka Aththeyara Rakshana Vedike. Over 200 mothers-in-laws from across the country are expected to take part in the meeting to be held between 2 pm and 5 pm at the Shaneswara Temple Hall at Hanumanthnagar

06 Oct 09 Mothers-in-law of the world, unite!!!

NAGPUR: Exactly a month ago, when the All India Mother-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF) started work, it had been greeted with expressions ranging from disbelief to a matter-of-fact nod of the head. However, here is some news for those who felt this was just a gimmick: since its inception on September 6, 30 mothers-in-law from the city have joined the forum!

The AIMPF, which is an initiative of the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), operates across the country and inaugurated its Nagpur unit recently. Interestingly, SIFF has often been described as an organisation of ‘women-haters’. That myth goes pop with the success of AIMPF.

12 Sep 09 Attitude towards mom-in-laws should change

We will try to meet every Sunday and discuss cases of harassment

Odeal D’Souza

In September 2007, a 50-year-old lady along with her family members were arrested in the city, after her daughter-in-law levied false charges of dowry harassment against them and demanded Rs12 lakh as compensation. Two years later, she and two other women formed an NGO, the ‘All India Mothers-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF)’ to fight against injustices that mothers-in-law often have to face in the county. This was launched last Sunday in the city. Neena Dhulia, one of the coordinators of the NGO, spoke to Odeal D’Souza on the forum’s initiatives and other related issues.

Tell us something about the initial days of the forum.
When we, some of the founding members of this forum who are also the members of Safe Indian Family Foundation, met for discussions, we realised that all of us faced a similar problem-false cases of dowry harassment filed against us by our daughters-in-law. So we decided to form this organisation that was officially launched last Sunday. Apart from myself, there are two other co-ordinators – Mamta Naik and Sahira Shiggon.

08 Sep 09 Moms-in-law run for cover

Mothers-in-law, under the umbrella of All India Mother-in-law Protection Forum, come together to protect themselves against harassment from daughters-in-law

Written by Manasi Paresh Kumar

Harassed mothers-in-law? Though the term sounds like a complete oxymoron, the 50-odd members of the All India Mother-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF) who gathered at Cubbon Park on Sunday vehemently asserted their victim status.

Most of the women, who were in their late 50s, had the same story to tell. Their daughters-in-law had filed false cases against them and their families and they had no help because the mothers-in-law were the original stereotyped monsters. “Nobody wants to believe the grooms’ family, and the mothers-in-law can be a harassed lot,” said Meena Menon, whose daughter-in-law allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh to withdraw the dowry case against her family.
