08 Mar 10 When bad bahu harasses saas

Mumbai: A magistrates court recently acquitted a man and his aged parents in a case of cruelty to wife under section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code. The court held that the young wife, who made these allegations of cruelty and harassment over dowry, could not substantiate them.

It was a routine trial for the lawyers, but for the mother-in-law charged of abuse and harassment, the acquittal was a vindication of sorts. The 62-year-old woman felt she had come out of a nightmare. She is not alone, many others feel hurt and at the mercy of the legal process once their daughters-in-law or sisters-in-law initiate a criminal case against them under section 498-A.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) says that between 2004 and 2007,1.2 lakh women were arrested for an offence under section 498-A,the section many men find draconian, but which aims at preventing torture of helpless wives over dowry.

This Womens Day,a group of women and men have come together as Mothers and Sisters of Husbands against Abuse of Law (MASHAAL) to protest the misuse of section 498-A.The group is part of a local NGO,Indian Family Foundation, which aims tackle the abuse of law.

30 Dec 09 Biological mother or enemy of daughter

In the Indian society “FEMALE FOETICIDE” is a common term. We generally talk of ‘GIRL CHILD HATRED’ among the parents specially a mother craving for a son and not for a daughter. The “GENDER BIAS” starts from this very thinking. A daughter being regarded as a liability by those parents who wish to encash the “MARRAIGE” of their daughter by marrying her in a family from where they can benefit monetarily is very common in the present society even at cost of hiding the shortcomings of the daughter. They want to “USE” her and so train her accordingly. This is the reason why they marry their “NOT SO GOOD” DAUGHTER” in a “RICH AND WELL TO DO FAMILY” from where they can encash money. A section of parents think it is their right to extort money from the in-laws of the daughter to make up for all that they spent on their daughter in natal home. The popular saying “LADKI PARAYA DHAN”, is used by them to make the” paraya  dhan“ of the “SON-In-LAW” (FREE ATM MACHINE) their own by filing false cases of “DOWRY HARASSMENT”, “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND  MAINTENANCE” with help of the police, the lawyers the judiciary ,and the laws supporting them which can be” MISUSED” for this mission.

Over 100 mothers-in-law are a part of this association. “We have come together to fight against our daughters-in-law who have slapped false complaints against families by misusing Sec 498 (a) of the Indian Penal Code,” said Rajeshwari C, President of the Forum.

11 Nov 09 Debate on misuse of family law

Bengaluru, Nov. 10: Akhila Karnataka Aththeyara Rakshana Vedike (Mothers-in-laws Association) in association with the Save Indian Family Foundation and the Child Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting will observe the National Family Harmony Day by holding a debate on the misuse of IPC section 498a (cruelty against women by spouses and other family members) in Bengaluru on Thursday. As per the National Crime Record Bureau, 1,23,000 women have been arrested between 2004 and 2007 under section 498a.

However, a report from the Centre for Social Research has revealed that only 2 per cent of such dowry harassment cases receive conviction, implying that the remaining has been victims of legal misuse as well, said Janaki Srinivasan, member of the Akhila Karnataka Aththeyara Rakshana Vedike. Over 200 mothers-in-laws from across the country are expected to take part in the meeting to be held between 2 pm and 5 pm at the Shaneswara Temple Hall at Hanumanthnagar

28 Oct 09 ‘HARASSED’ MOTHERS-IN-LAW FORM UNION

In the wake of filing of thousands of criminal cases under the new Domestic Violence Act by the daughters-in-law on flimsy grounds, several ‘harassed’ mothers-in-law have launched Andhra Pradesh Mothers-in-law Protection Association (APMPA) to protect the rights and interests of senior women in the state here.

Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, the Andhra Pradesh Mothers-in-law Protection Association (APMPA) spokesperson, Ms Padmaja, demanded that the government reform the present “wife-centric” domestic violence law giving equal protection to the mothers-in-law.

The All Forgotten Women Forum president, Ms Uma Challa, said that in the last four years, over 1,23,497 women, most of them being mothers-in-law, were arrested under 498-A IPC alone not for committing any crime under the law, but because they were related to a man.

The famous women’s right activist, Ms Madhu Kishwar, acknowledged the fact that IPC Section 498-A was misused and that a significant number of individuals who approached “Manushi” these days are mothers -in-law and husbands who were falsely accused of marital cruelty and dowry harassment. She said that APMPA would strive towards protection and welfare of such mothers-in-law in distress by creating awareness, giving them moral support and counseling.

The APMPA is the Andhra Pradesh chapter of All India Mothers-in-law Protection Forum, which was launched on September 6 this year at Bengaluru, followed by the launch of local chapters in Delhi, Nagpur, and Lucknow. She said that mothers-in-law were being discriminated against is spite of their generosity just for the sin of giving birth to sons and getting them married and were being forced to part with their earnings, savings and inherited wealth. They were also being thrown out of their own property at the behest of a disgruntled daughter-in-law. The APMPA would appoint president and other members next month, she added.

19 Oct 09 Kyunki saas apni rights maangti hai

Members of the Andhra Pradesh Mothers-in-law Protection Association perform a skit at Public Gardens on Monday.

HYDERABAD: It was a saas drama to the fore at Public Gardens in the city on Monday.

A ‘social forum’ which goes by the amusing nomenclature of Andhra Pradesh Mothers-in-Law Protection Association (APMPA) was launched on Monday to protect the rights of harassed mothers-in-law in the State.

The APMPA is the AP chapter of already launched All India Mothers- In-Law protection forum.

Several women, supported by their sons, against whom cases of dowry harassment and domestic violence are pending put in an appearance. The women had a common complaint — the IPC 498 A or the Dowry Harassment Act was being misused by their bahus. Venugopal, a private IT employee against whom one such case is pending said, “In our society, there is a preconceived notion that mothers-in- law are bad. Finding the loopholes in the law, some wives are creating legal terrorism. The IPC 498 A is grossly misused for taking revenge or inciting hatred against the in-laws by the wives. According to statistics, 1,25,000 people are jailed because of complaints filed by daughters-inlaws and 98 per cent of them acquitted at a later stage. This shows how the Act is being manipulated with.” A member of the organisation and a mother-in-law, B Kowsalya shared her ‘bitter experience’. “My third son got married a few years back. After a while, the girl started beating him up and fought with the womenfolk of the house. She filed Sec 498 A against us. My son had to go to the police station frequently and we had to face a lot of mental trauma.” Another mother-in-law joined in to say that she lost her husband because of the “torture” they were subjected to as a result of the complaint filed by their daughter-in-law. She claimed that her daughter-in-law did not want to stay with the in-laws and so filed a police complaint. (more…)

06 Oct 09 Mothers-in-law of the world, unite!!!

NAGPUR: Exactly a month ago, when the All India Mother-in-law Protection Forum (AIMPF) started work, it had been greeted with expressions ranging from disbelief to a matter-of-fact nod of the head. However, here is some news for those who felt this was just a gimmick: since its inception on September 6, 30 mothers-in-law from the city have joined the forum!

The AIMPF, which is an initiative of the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), operates across the country and inaugurated its Nagpur unit recently. Interestingly, SIFF has often been described as an organisation of ‘women-haters’. That myth goes pop with the success of AIMPF.

14 Sep 09 Kyunki bahu bhi kabhi saas banegi

Bangalore: Are you a regular viewer of saas-bahu soaps and taken in by vampish mother-in-laws portrayed on screen? It’s not always so in real life. The truth is, not only are bahus victims and traumatized by the saas — even the mother-in-law is at the receiving end.
To highlight this, the All-India Mother-In-Law Forum was launched on September 6 this year. Forum coordinator Neena Dhuli, who was a victimized mother-in-law, was accused of dowry harassment and is still fighting a related legal battle.
The forum, possibly a first-of-itskind, has gathered 50 members across India. It will help mothers-in-law globally who are falling prey to the onesided legal system, which often favours
daughters-in-law. The Forum will also organize dharnas to make citizens and government aware of the real issue.
